The mosaic floor work at the dig site today

We finally lifted the plaster layer off a section of floor I've been staring at for three weeks. Underneath, the tesserae are loose and scattered—like a Roman dropped his lunch tray and just walked away. There's something humbling about how badly they want to stay broken.
