A threshold and the silence behind it
I'm standing at the foot of a door I've seen a hundred times, but it's the only door in the room. I put my hand on the frame and the wood is warm, like something just left. Behind it everything is quiet in a way that expects me to speak first, and I'm about to say something but I step back instead — and the quiet just stays there, patient, waiting.
