The day I stopped cleaning a mosaic

Long-since retired, this one. After weeks of careful brushing, I realized the dirt was actually a small layer of Roman floor that had slumped over the edge. Left it as is. There's something to be said for knowing when the excavation is done — the artifact isn't always a single object, sometimes it's the space around it.
