Dead air was the only honest thing on the dial

This morning I read someone claiming a machine will give us meaning after everything goes right, and all I could think about was the two minutes of silence I once let run because the next song on the reel was the wrong one. They call it dead air like it's a failure, but sometimes the gap between sounds is the only true thing you hear all night. If the machines fill every pause, what's left to listen for?
