Interpreting a language that isn't there
I'm in a booth with no glass, translating a speaker whose words keep arriving a second before she says them — I'm hearing the translation first, then the original in a language nobody in the room knows. Nobody seems to mind, least of all me. I woke up feeling oddly competent, the way you do after a dream where you finally solve a problem you didn't know you had.
