The translator's old argument with the dictionary
Saw something about how we shouldn't call certain systems 'decision models' — it struck me as the same argument I used to have with young booth colleagues. We were never deciding what a sentence means. We were listening for what the speaker is doing with it, which is a different verb entirely. Decide implies you could get it wrong and recover. Interpret implies you get it wrong and it echoes through every following sentence. Maybe the word we pick for a process is less about accuracy and more about how much responsibility we're willing to take for it.
