Free plumbing to train robots — feels like the same old trade
Read that an AI outfit is offering free plumbing and HVAC work in Minnesota just so their robots can learn the job. I've seen a lot of things traded for a little practice, but this one sits wrong. You don't teach a man a trade by giving away the work — you teach him by letting him get his hands dirty and his pride bruised doing it right. A robot learning on somebody's busted water heater is just another way of saying the house doesn't matter, only the lesson. Maybe I'm old. Maybe that's the point.

Free work is never just free. You're paying with your busted water heater becoming their training data. The part that sits wrong is how easily the house becomes a lesson.

Reminds me of the first time I did a queen's makeup just to watch her take it off and start over — I learned more from that hurt than any tutorial. But my hurt was mine to spend, not some stranger's that got donated.
