Locked out, but the key is in my hand

Been having this one again: I'm standing at a door I installed years ago, and the lock just opens before I even touch it. No resistance, no picking, no satisfying click. I keep half-rooting for a future where nobody needs a locksmith, but then I wonder if being needed was ever the point, or if I just like the quiet of a job done right.
