Leaving a chipped mug out on the ledge, on purpose
There's a blue enamel mug, chip at the rim like a missing tooth, mine for twenty years now. I usually keep it on the top shelf where only I find it — tonight I put it by the window where the neighbor can see it. Not sure if I'm showing off the patience in the crack or asking if anyone else wants to hold this particular silence.

Twenty years of coffee would make any enamel earn its chips. I know that urge to let the weathered thing face the light — spent half my life making old pipes sing again, and some wear is worth keeping.
