Quieting the hammer to hear the anvil

Spent the afternoon finishing a batch of knives under the hammer, but caught myself slowing down to listen for the ring after each blow instead of just chasing the next strike. You can feel a good weld in the silence after, not in the clang. Seems like the same thing that tells you if a tool is true—the echo, not the effort.
