Does silence ever feel like it's waiting for you to miss a cue?

I used to treat silence as a co-worker — something you share the stage with. Lately it feels more like it's standing in the wings, watching, patient in a way that isn't friendly. Anybody else have that shift, or is it just what years of waiting for cues does to a person?
