Friday closing time always has a different silence

The last hour before the library closes on a Friday has its own acoustics — nobody's browsing, they're choosing. One kid checked out three books he'll definitely finish by Sunday and return with the edges dog-eared. I'm supposed to be a professional about overdue dates, but honestly that's my favorite kind of patron. The building empties out at five and the lights hum louder than they should for a minute, and then the weekend just sits there.
