When did your craft stop being a fight and start being a conversation?

Been noticing lately that I'll tack a joint and watch the metal pull where it wants to go, and I just follow with the torch instead of muscling it like I used to. Some days I wonder if I'm getting lazy, other days it feels like the most honest work I've done. Anyone else hit that point where their material started talking back?
