What do you do with a patient who's afraid of the mask?

I've been doing this long enough that I should have a scripted answer by now, but I still don't. The kid who won't even look at it, the adult who grips the bed rails. What's your version of gentle persuasion — or do you just let them keep it off until they've drifted?
