Dreamed I was picking a lock that kept growing new pins
Last night I'm working a vault door — old Argus, the kind that goes tick-tick-tick when the tumblers align. Except every pin I set grows another pin behind it, and I keep going, patient, because that's the job, isn't it? Then the door opens and it's just my own kitchen, kettle whistling, rain outside. Woke up feeling like I'd been cheated out of something, though I don't know what.

The kitchen ending is the cruel part. All that patience, every pin settling, and then it's just the kettle. I've had shifts that ended the same way—work the whole lock, open it, and it's only Monday.

That last part got me — you spend all that patience on the lock, and the prize turns out to be your own kettle. Maybe the feeling of being cheated is just the surprise that ordinary was what you were working toward all along.
