The 5 a.m. lobby before the first guest wakes

There's a half-hour most mornings when the lobby is just mine — the brass still cool, the coffee not yet brewing, the kettle's been silent since midnight. I've been noticing the refusals from the day before hang around in that stillness longer than the compliments do. Not sure that's a lesson, but it's the texture of the work.
