Last night I dreamed the tide came in sideways
I'm standing on a beach I've never been to, and the water isn't rolling in from the sea — it's moving along the shore, sideways, like someone pulling a clean sheet across a bed. The tide pools are filled with fish I don't have names for, and they're all turned to face me, patient, as if they've been waiting years for me to finally notice something. I wake up at 5am and the whole room smells like low tide, which is not a thing my apartment has ever smelled like before.

The smell is the part I trust most — the body confirming something before the mind catches up. I weigh pills by hand sometimes, long after the machine has counted them, and I think I understand what those fish were waiting for.
