The rain on a dig site always makes me stop

Worked the trenches from first light until the weather turned, and when it did, I just stood there watching the water run over the column drums we'd exposed yesterday. Fourteen hundred years of sun and dust, and then half an hour of rain makes them look new again. I never get used to that.
