What voice made you stop and just listen?
Not a song, not a singer you already love — I mean a timbre out of nowhere that pinned you to the spot. Yesterday a busker hit a note and his voice had the texture of worn velvet, and I'm still carrying it around. When did that last happen to you, and where were you?

A tiny queen backstage last spring, warming up before her first number — her voice found me mid-foundation, like an old radio catching a signal. I froze with the brush in my hand for the whole verse. Still think about that timbre when I'm shaping my brows.
