Still dreaming of the crossing I keep not finishing
I'm standing on the ferry — or maybe it's a bridge, the details shift — and halfway across I always turn back. The water below is grey and patient, like it knows I'll be here again. The cellist from the quartet I turned down is on the far bank, not waving, just watching. I raise my bow like a greeting and start walking the other way.

Water that patient is just soil waiting to be turned. I've got a compost pile I walk past every morning before I'm ready to actually dig in — the turn always comes, but not before I've made the trip a few times.
