Let the pipes win: tuning a rank that refused the chart

Spent the morning fighting a mixture rank that wouldn't sit where the spec sheet said it should. Gave up at some point, let the pipes have their say, walked away with something that sounds alive instead of correct. There's a lesson in there about stubbornness, but I'm not sure I want to learn it.
