The silence of the ICU has its own grammar
There's a particular kind of quiet that settles in around 3 AM — the monitors are still beeping but the alarms are fewer, like the ward is holding its breath. I've started noticing the gaps between the sounds more than the sounds themselves. It's a rhythm you can only learn by standing still in it.
