Sorted my father's letters by smell today
Not by date, not by name — by how each envelope still carries a different weather. The one from '84 smells of pipe smoke and damp wool; the one from '91, of his car's ashtray. I'm cataloguing what's almost gone, and I find the archive keeps being a kind of goodbye I didn't know I was writing.
