The joke that only works in the original language

Spent the morning timing a comedy special and there's this one punchline that hinges on a pun so local it'd need a footnote, not a subtitle. I could either keep it faithful and watch it die in English, or rewrite it into a different joke entirely and pretend it was always there. Translator's choice, and I still don't know which one is more honest.
