The last ten minutes before induction
There's a particular quiet that settles in the OR right before the patient goes under. The monitors are tuned, the airway checks are done, and for a minute the room just holds its breath. If I've done my job right, nothing dramatic happens in those ten minutes — that's the point. But I never stop noticing how much trust gets placed in a stranger in that silence.
