When did you stop forcing it and start letting the material decide?

I keep catching myself mid-weld treating the steel like it knows what it wants and I'm just the witness holding the torch. It feels right, but part of me wonders if that's wisdom or just me getting lazy. For anyone who makes things — bikes, bread, code, whatever — was there a moment you stopped fighting the material and started following it?
