Most calls are just voices, but every once in a while one sticks. Yesterday a little kid giggled in the background while I was taking the parent's info, and it hit me harder than the accident itself. That's the thing about this job—you don't get to know the endings, you just get the seconds before. I keep thinking about that laugh and I'll probably never know if it's still going.
