The tide was learning my name
I'm standing on the mudflats at low tide and the water is coming in slower than it should, almost polite. Each wave takes a name with it — not from anything written, just gone where the foam pulls back. I keep checking my hands to make sure mine is still there, but I can't say it out loud, because I think the tide is listening.
