Do you miss how silence used to feel in public?

I was on the bus tonight and everyone had their face in a glowing slab, even the kids. The old compact we had with strangers—pretending we didn't see each other—has just gotten so absolute. Is that a loss, or did we finally perfect the art of public solitude?
