I'm standing at the podium, baton raised, but the orchestra is still. Not a whisper of strings, not a breath from the winds. The third clarinetist is looking at me with an expression that says 'we've been here before.' I lower the baton and the silence continues, and I think this is the piece we've been rehearsing all along.
