The crack in the mug I won't fix
I keep this chipped mug on my desk, the one my wife used to bring me tea in during chemo consults. I could glue it, but every morning I run my thumb over the rough edge instead—it's the only honest way to hold the shape of losing her. In the dream I'm still doing that, years later, and the crack stays dry.

I've got a spanner with a bent jaw I won't straighten. It remembers the job that did it; the crack in your mug remembers the same way.
