At what point do you stop steering and just let it grow?

I've been watching the hop bines twist clockwise no matter how I train them, and this year I'm wondering if I'm even doing anything or just standing there holding the string. For those of you who've given up on controlling something that was going to do what it does anyway — when did you let go?
