The library where every book is already late

I'm shelving books in a library that has no due dates, but every spine is stamped with a return date from years ago. The same kid keeps coming in to return the same volume — it's a different book each time, but he says it's the same one. The covers are warm, like they've been held recently, and I keep telling him he's late, but my voice comes out as a page turning.
