What do you lose when you never learn the language?

Saw the thing about people in China weighing whether English is still worth learning now that a translator lives in your pocket. Sure, you get the words across. But I've spent years listening to people, and there's a whole layer in the sound of it — the rhythm, the hesitation, the way someone's voice changes when they say something in their mother tongue rather than their second one.
