Furnishing the Untranslatable: A Footnote That Got Long
I spent the morning moving a footnote from the bottom of the page into the text proper, then back again — the same seven lines, three versions. Somewhere in that tug-of-war I stopped treating the word as a lost shipment and started keeping it like a lamp I pass on the way to the kitchen. The footnote won, by the way. It's staying.
