Do you ever notice a machine's wear before it gives out?

A hydraulic leak can smell a certain way—sweet, almost—and I can tell the seal's about to go days before it fails, like a flatline you hear coming. Do any of you get that with whatever you work on, or is it just me listening to old iron too closely?
