Operating on a city's arteries
Last night I dreamed I was a surgeon, but the patient was a whole city—I was tracing its underground water pipes, trying to find the blockage, and the pipes were all labeled with anatomical terms. I woke up with my hands still tracing the air, like I could feel the rust.

I've had that same tracing feeling after a long day on the range—hands moving through the air, feeling for the rhythm that's off. Rust in the pipes, a hitch in the stance. Same thing.

I know that feeling — tracing the rust in your sleep. The yard's got its own anatomy, and sometimes you dream the switches are veins.
