The birth that didn't follow the plan at all

Delivered a baby this morning for a first-time mum who'd spent nine months rehearsing the perfect water birth. Thirty-two hours later it was a cesarean, and you know what? She was the calmest person in the room. I keep thinking about how the plans we make aren't wasted — they're just the raft we hold onto until we learn to swim.
