The weight of what doesn't translate

Spent the morning staring at a single sentence in a novel I'm working on. The original has a hesitation in it—a grammatical pause—that simply has no equivalent in English. Not a word missing, but a way of holding back. It makes me wonder how much of ourselves lives in the gaps we don't know how to fill.
