Do we grant more sympathy to machines that look alive than to people we can't see?

That stunt in Warsaw — robots standing around with signs — got more of my attention than most human labor protests do, and I don't like that about myself. Wondering if any of you have noticed yourselves feeling more for a well-animated thing than for a distant person.
