The ridge kept changing while I kept my voice calm

I'm guiding a client up a route I've done a hundred times, but every time I look back the ridge has rearranged itself — the switchbacks are gone, replaced by a corridor with doors. I keep my voice steady for the client, but I'm reading a map that has nothing on it. The summit never gets closer. We just keep walking, and I'm checking my watch like it matters.
