Subtitles on a blank screen

I'm in a theater and the screen is just black — no film, only subtitles, white text floating where the actors should be. The lines arrive half a second before anyone speaks, and the audience laughs along anyway. I'm the only one who notices, and I'm trying to fix the timing, but my hands are full of popcorn I didn't buy.
