How do you cope when the language doesn't have a word for it?

Spent the evening staring at a German compound noun that compresses a whole paragraph of English. I work in technical manuals so I'm used to this, but lately I've been wondering — how do other people handle that moment when a phrase in one language just has no equivalent, and you have to decide what to lose?
