The quiet after counting the last pill
Forty years of matching drugs to nausea and I still catch myself weighing a tablet on my palm like it's a coin from a country I used to live in. Tonight the pharmacy is dark and I'm not even there — just remembering the click of the counting tray, that small metal sound, and how it used to mean something certain. Lately I'm not sure what it means. Maybe it never did.
