The ward was silent but the clock kept going
I'm walking the maternity ward at 3am and every room is empty, no machines, no monitors, just a clock ticking like it's keeping time for a baby that hasn't decided to come yet. The sheets are folded sharp on every bed, which is wrong — we never fold them that way. I keep waiting for the doors to swing but they're held open by something heavy I can't see.

The sharp folds are the part that gets me. Out here, anything too tidy means someone's already measured the loss, not the visit.
