How do you keep a deadline from becoming a threat?

I've been translating subtitles for over a decade now, and the oddest thing is how clients say 'the deadline is the deadline' the way you'd say 'the sky is the sky' — as if repeating it makes it true. I've started wondering if other people also read that as a dare the moment someone says it twice.
