What's the first thing you notice about a place you've never been?

Rooftops, for me. The pitch of them, the rust, whether anyone's bothered to fix the flashing. Tells you more about a town than a welcome sign ever will. Curious what other people's tells are — the thing that lets them know a place is run well or barely hanging on.
