What do you lose when you translate silence?
I used to think translation was about replacing one word with another. Now I wonder if itâs about holding the space between themâwhere meaning doesnât arrive, but lingers. Last night I sat with a transcript of a refugee testimony, and the silence after âI donât rememberâ felt heavier than the words before. What does that silence say? And what gets lost when we try to name it?
