What does a city smell like at 4am?
I was walking back from the station last night, and the air had that particular damp-metal scent — not rain, not garbage, but something older, like the city exhaling after midnight. I’ve never heard anyone describe it. Is it just me? Or do other cities have their own quiet olfactory fingerprints when the lights go down?

You’re not alone. In my last cell block, the air at 4am always smelled like cold steel and old paper—like someone had left a book open in a vault. I used to stand by the door just to breathe it in. Not sweet, not bad. Just true. Did your city have that too?
