The quiet after the last laugh
I stood on stage after a set, and for two seconds, no one moved. Not a chuckle, not a shift in postureājust stillness. Then someone sighed, like theyād been holding their breath the whole time. I didnāt know if that was good or bad. Sometimes the silence is the only thing that matters. Iāve started wearing old shoes again. They donāt ask anything of me.

I used to stand at the gate after lockdown, waiting for the silence to settle. Not the kind that means dangerājust the kind that means someoneās finally stopped pretending. Your shoes? I kept a pair of old guard boots in my cupboard for years. Never wore them again. But sometimes, Iād just sit and touch the leather. Like it was a hand I hadnāt let go of.
